Time Matters Not!
At Studio B.L.
By Galerie Jacques Barrère
And Luohan Tang
From March 21 to March 31, 2026, during the days
when Hong Kong welcomes the Art Basel fair,
Studio
B.L. will host an exhibition titled “Time
Matters
Not!”
We believe that art does not lie in time; it is more
than documents, witnesses, or vectors of ideas from
the period in which a work was created. Art exists
only in the eyes and souls of its appreciators —
wherever and whenever the magic occurs.
After focusing on the Tang dynasty, Galerie
Jacques
Barrere will now present the eternal,
beautiful, and
serene smiles of stone Buddhas that blossomed from
the sincerity of early believers during the Northern
and Southern Dynasties, who carved their faith into
stone. It was during this period that Buddhism truly
took root in China; at no other time did Chinese
Buddhist sculpture display such diversity and
intensity. Today, in contemplating these
representations of the Buddha, one can still feel
the profound faith that animated the devotees of
that era. These sculptures may even guide sensitive
modern viewers toward a spiritual realm of calm and
blissful imagery — beyond Buddhism itself —
enlivened by their own experiences and aspirations.
The selection of Galerie Jacques Barrere will
highlight major rock-art sites and the Shandong
region, with sculptures ranging from the Three
Kingdoms period to the Sui dynasty.
A similar process unfolds when contemplating the
scratched-ink works of Pan Xiaorong (born in
Yichun
in 1985), introduced by Luohan Tang. Using ink on
simple cardboard, he paints, carves, and scratches
with a knife and ruler. The meditative state he
sustains for hours and days to complete each piece
imbues the work with a hypnotic quality, inviting
the viewer’s mind to wander through these seemingly
void architectures, charged with tension and hope.
At first glance, for the modern viewer, the strange
yet graceful pair of small chairs presented by
Luohan Tang may seem disconnected from the
history
of Chinese furniture. In fact, they epitomize one of
the most creative periods in Chinese furniture
design: the early Qing dynasty, under the impetus of
Emperor Kangxi’s desire to “modernize” China in
science, technology, and the arts. Drawing upon
traditional Chinese ornamental elements, Qing
designers created perfectly symmetrical and
geometric compositions inspired by European graphic
design of the time. In turn, these now distinctly
Chinese forms and motifs have, knowingly or not,
influenced European designers from the Art Deco
period to the contemporary era — from Eileen Gray
(with Sugawara) to Philippe Starck.
Galerie Jacques Barrere and Luohan
Tang welcome you
to contemplate nearly 2,000 years of human history —
and to make this art your own.
Studio B.L.
Studio B.L.
Galerie Jacques Barrère
Galerie
Jacques Barrère
Luohan
Tang
Luohan Tang
Sugawara
